Devil’s Pool Victoria Falls: What to Know Before You Go

The famous photograph makes Devil’s Pool look like a single daring moment. The real experience is broader: a boat trip to Livingstone Island, a guided visit at the top of Victoria Falls, a carefully managed swimming section when conditions allow, and a meal linked to the package you choose.

You do not simply walk to Devil’s Pool

Devil’s Pool is accessed through Livingstone Island on the Zambian side. Guests travel to the island with the operating team and continue under guide supervision. It is not an independent swimming spot.

The river is powerful even in lower-water periods. The route and exact pool used are determined by operating conditions.

Why the opening dates move

The Zambezi does not follow a neat tourism calendar. Rainfall across a huge upstream catchment changes the river gradually. Devil’s Pool normally operates when water levels are low enough, but the exact opening and closing dates can shift.

At other times, Angel’s Pool or a Livingstone Island visit may be available instead.

Victoria Falls landscape and gorge
The swimming experience is only one part of visiting Livingstone Island at the top of Victoria Falls.

What happens on the island?

Your guide introduces the island and the position of the Falls, then explains the swimming procedure if a pool is operating. Packages may include a morning meal, lunch or high tea, so the experience feels more complete than a quick photo stop.

How frightening is it?

That depends on your comfort with water and exposed landscapes. The setting is dramatic, but the experience is structured. Listen closely to the guide and do not improvise your own route or photo position.

What should you take?

Bring swimwear, sun protection and a change of clothing if needed. Follow the operator’s advice on footwear and personal items. Loose phones and cameras may be handled differently during the swimming section, so ask before the activity begins.

Do not build the whole holiday around an assumed opening date.

Book the island experience according to confirmed conditions for your travel dates and stay flexible about which pool is operating.

Is it worth doing after a normal Falls tour?

Yes, if this style of experience appeals to you. A rainforest walk looks across and into Victoria Falls. Livingstone Island gives you a sense of the river at the top of the waterfall. They are very different perspectives.
